Dylan is a gifted writer—I’ll give her that. I was completely sucked in after book one and couldn’t wait for the release of book two. I find myself extremely disappointed, and honestly a bit let down after reading this book, however. The ending is absolutely heartbreaking and I wasn’t a fan of how the epilogue was done.Dylan’s excuse for the disappointing ending is because life doesn’t always have a happy ending. I think she wanted the story to feel more real and have more realistic consequences, but in my opinion, the story was already pretty unbelievable, which by the way is completely okay, but to take a storyline that’d realistically never happen in the first place and then end it the way she did to insert some realism just sucked and didn’t make sense.I’m all for these types of stories. I’m all about the fantasy and can get behind the darkness. I love the complexity and humanization of the characters, BUT very few people want to read romance novels with a sad ending. I feel like the type of ending this book has deserves just as much of a warning to potential readers as the other triggers she warned about.We don’t need a lesson from the author on reality and the lack of happy endings. Doesn’t she think we know that? Life is complicated, sad, and messy. That’s why so many of us want the escape and a good resolution.This story just left me feeling unsettled, and I honestly probably wouldn’t read another book of hers because of it. And yes, I understand some people love all the feels and love the tragic romances, but most of us at least want to know what we’re getting ourselves into because *most* romances, even dark ones, do have some kind of happy ending. Nothing about this ending was happy. Dylan said Shay needed to be redeemed. She could have done this in so many other ways.Bleh!! Now I need a palate cleanser.
